“Accountability” is “headline material” these days: how are government agencies kept “accountable” for their actions? How is a corporation “accountable” to its stockholders? How are Church leaders held “accountable” so that trust may grow where it’s been damaged in our times?
All of us are “accountable” before God, first of all, for our wise stewardship of the “goods” entrusted to our care throughout the course of our lives: what we do with our time to give glory to God and service to one another? How we share the talents we’ve been given so as to work with God in building His Kingdom? How do we manage our resources wisely so as to be generous and not too attached to material things? Depending on our vocation and state in life (single, married, vowed religious, ordained), our work, tasks we’re entrusted with… we’re “accountable” to others: our families, our communities, our co-workers.
Both personally and institutionally, accountability is something all of us must face to some degree… and it shouldn’t seem intimidating or daunting… it’s all part of our response to growing in God’s grace! This section is designed to provide some details of how Church and her leaders strive to keep themselves accountable before God and one another for the good the souls entrusted to her care. You’ll also find some ideas of “personal accountability” that are part of Catholic life and that might prove helpful!
